Lasted Post: Winterizing Your BBQ Grill
Summer’s coming to an end, and it’s time to pack up your grill for winter. Winterizing your BBQ grill is a simple but vital process that extends your grill’s durability and lifespan, and ensures your grill will be ready when you need it next season.
Winterizing Gas Grills
Start by running the grill on high heat for 15-20 to burn off any excess food. Once the grill has cooled, scrape the grates with a stiff, wire brush to remove any remaining grease or charred residue. Then take the grates out and clean them off with soapy water or an oven cleaner if you have really stubborn stains. Rinse the grills thoroughly when you’re done.
Once the grates are clean, remove the flame tamers and clean them with soapy water or oven cleaner as well. If the food remnants are really baked on, soak them in water for thirty minutes or an hour to loosen them up.
If you have lava rocks instead of flame tamers, inspect them. If they’re crumbling, or starting to crumble, it may be a good time to replace them.
Turn on the burners and check the flames to make sure there are no blockages. If there are, turn off the flames and clean out the burners using a pipe cleaner. Then clean out the drip pan and sweep the bottom of the grill. You want to make sure all the ash and carbon flakes are gone before you store it. A thick bed of ash makes a good home for mice or other rodents seeking shelter during winter.
Finally, wipe down the exterior of the grill with soapy water. Avoid any harsh cleansers or stainless steel, as this may scuff or damage the paint. You may also want to wash the inside of the grill lid if any scale and greasy buildup has accumulated there.
This is also a good time to repair any damage. Check the hoses for cracks, install new burners, and replace rusted handles, loose knobs, or malfunctioning temperature gauges to make certain your grill will be ready when you bring it out again in the spring.
Winterizing Charcoal Grills
The process for charcoal grills is similar. Remove the grates and clean them thoroughly with soapy water or oven cleaner. Toss out any leftover briquettes, dispose of any ash or charcoal out from the bottom of the grill, and wash it out with soapy water. A steel wool pad will help get rid of any tough stains. Wash the inside of the grill lid and wipe down the exterior with warm water and a soft cloth.

Storing Your Grill
Always store your grill indoors if you can. Exposure to harsh winter weather can cause rust or other damage. If you’re storing your grill outside, or if it’s part of an outdoor kitchen, make sure you cover it to shield it from the wind, rain, and snow. Prolonged exposure to the elements will shorten its lifespan.
